Built for Alexander Menshikov, the close associate of Peter the Great, this early-eighteenth-century palace on Vasilyevsky Island was among the first grand stone residences in the young capital. Its restrained Baroque facade faces the Neva, while inside, rooms lined with Dutch Delft tiles evoke the fashionable European taste of Peter's court. Now a branch of the Hermitage, it presents early Petrine culture through period furnishings, tiled chambers and carved staircases.
