These two tall red columns stand on the spit of Vasilyevsky Island, decorated with projecting ship prows in the ancient tradition of celebrating naval victories. Erected in the early nineteenth century, they once functioned as beacons for the port, and gas torches at their summits are still lit on major holidays, sending flames high above the Neva. With the former stock-exchange building behind them, they form one of the city's most balanced classical ensembles.
