Sixty-five metres beneath the Taganka district lies a decommissioned Soviet command bunker built in the 1950s to survive a nuclear strike and coordinate long-range bombers. Now a museum, it is reached by a long spiral staircase into tunnels lined with reconstructed communications equipment, blast doors and period propaganda. Guides walk visitors through Cold War scenarios, including simulated launch drills, in the cramped concrete corridors that Moscow once prepared for a conflict that never came.
