This church on the northern edge of Kyiv was founded in the twelfth century and preserves a rare body of medieval fresco painting beneath later Baroque additions. Restoration work in the nineteenth century brought in prominent artists, including early murals by a young Mikhail Vrubel, whose distinctive figures survive inside. The whitewashed exterior with its cluster of domes gives little hint of the layered art within. Now a museum, it draws visitors interested in both old Rus and modern painting.
