Opened in the early twentieth century, this short funicular railway climbs the steep bluff between the riverside Podil district and the upper city near Saint Michael's monastery. Two counter-balanced cars run up the wooded slope, sparing passengers a long stair climb and offering glimpses of the Dnieper through the trees. The line has been rebuilt and modernised over the decades but keeps its role in the transit network. It remains a favourite for the quick ride and the view from the top.
