Khreshchatyk is the main avenue of Kyiv, running for roughly a kilometre through the city centre along a former stream valley. Largely rebuilt in monumental postwar style after wartime destruction, it is lined with wide facades, chestnut trees, department stores and government buildings. On weekends and holidays the street is closed to traffic and becomes a broad pedestrian promenade filled with families, buskers and vendors. It links Independence Square with European Square, the spine of central Kyiv's life.
