This neo-Byzantine cathedral in central Kyiv was built over several decades in the late nineteenth century as a monument to the millennium of Christianity in the region. Its seven cupolas and warm ochre facade front a boulevard near the botanical garden. Inside, a celebrated cycle of murals by leading painters of the era covers the walls with saints, prophets and biblical scenes in a distinctive national style. Visitors come chiefly for these frescoes, the gilded iconostasis and the calm interior.
