This broad cobbled square forms the heart of the old town of Kaunas, Lithuania's second city. At its centre rises the tall white town hall, nicknamed the White Swan for its slender tower, surrounded by merchants' houses, churches and cafes. Markets, festivals and public celebrations have filled the space for centuries, and it remains a favoured spot for weddings and gatherings. The square links the surrounding medieval streets and stands close to the confluence of the Nemunas and Neris rivers at the tip of the old town.
