Set in the former headquarters of the Soviet KGB in central Vilnius, this museum documents the occupations, deportations and armed resistance that marked Lithuania's twentieth century. The preserved basement prison, with its cells and execution chamber, conveys the fate of many held here. Upstairs, exhibits trace the partisan war, mass deportations to Siberia and the surveillance state. Located on a prominent boulevard, the building itself is a monument to the repression it records, making the visit a stark encounter with recent history.
