An unusual eclectic building on the eastern side of Thessaloniki, the Yeni Cami was constructed in the early 20th century as a mosque for the city's community of Muslims descended from converted Jews. Designed by the architect Vitaliano Poselli, it blends Ottoman, Art Nouveau and neoclassical elements, with a domed prayer hall, a slender minaret and a marble portico. After the population exchange it served for a time as an archaeological museum. Today the restored structure functions as a municipal exhibition space.
