The city museum of Skopje occupies the shell of the old railway station, whose great clock stopped at the moment a catastrophic earthquake struck the city in 1963. The frozen clock and the ruined facade have themselves become a memorial to the disaster that destroyed much of the capital. Inside, exhibitions trace the settlement from antiquity through the Ottoman era to the modern reconstruction. Displays on the earthquake and the international relief effort make the museum a poignant record of the city's resilience.
