This Ottoman caravanserai in the old bazaar of Skopje once offered lodging to travelling merchants and stabling for their animals. Built in the sixteenth century, its arcaded courtyard of vaulted cells is topped by rows of small lead-covered domes that give the building its name, meaning the leaded inn. Over the centuries it served in turn as a hostel, prison, and store, before becoming a lapidarium displaying stone monuments. The tranquil galleried court is among the best-preserved examples of its kind in the Balkans.
