Kapana, meaning the trap, is a district of narrow interlocking lanes in central Plovdiv named for its maze-like layout dating to the city's craft-guild past. Once home to workshops and traders, it fell into decline before being revived as a creative quarter of galleries, cafes, bars, and studios. Colourful street art, restored houses, and small shops fill the pedestrian streets, which come alive in the evenings and during festivals. The district's transformation helped Plovdiv win recognition as a European Capital of Culture in 2019.
