The National Palace of Culture is the largest congress and exhibition centre in southeastern Europe, opened in Sofia in 1981 to mark the country's founding anniversary. Its massive octagonal form, clad in aluminium and marble, sits at the head of a broad boulevard and fountain-lined park. The complex holds numerous halls that host concerts, film festivals, and conferences throughout the year. Locals know it simply by its initials, and the surrounding square with its unfinished monument is a popular gathering and skateboarding spot.
