Sveta Nedelya Church stands on a busy square at the centre of Sofia, an Orthodox cathedral rebuilt many times on ancient foundations. The present domed structure dates from the late nineteenth century and holds the relics of a medieval Serbian king. In 1925 the church was the target of a devastating bomb attack aimed at Bulgaria's political and military leaders during a funeral, one of the deadliest in the country's history. Restored afterward, it remains a major place of worship surrounded by the modern city centre.
