Banya Bashi Mosque is the only functioning mosque in Sofia and a rare survivor of the city's Ottoman past, built in 1576 to a design attributed to the great architect Mimar Sinan. Its single large dome and slender minaret rise beside the historic mineral baths, from which it takes its name. The prayer hall carries painted decoration and a spacious domed interior typical of classical Ottoman mosques. Standing near the central market and synagogue, it forms part of a cluster of religious buildings that reflect Sofia's mixed heritage.
