The State Theatre in Kosice is an ornate neo-Baroque building standing at the centre of the city's main street, opened in 1899. Its richly decorated auditorium and painted ceiling depicting scenes from Shakespeare make it one of the most elegant performance halls in eastern Slovakia. The theatre presents opera, ballet, and drama and remains a focal point of civic cultural life. Directly in front of it stands a musical fountain whose jets are synchronised with a nearby chiming clock, a popular gathering spot on warm evenings.
