The East Slovak Museum in Kosice is one of the oldest museums in Slovakia, founded in 1872 to gather the archaeological and cultural heritage of the eastern region. Its historic main building houses natural-history and archaeology collections, while its most celebrated treasure is the Kosice Gold Treasure, a hoard of nearly three thousand gold coins and a Renaissance chain discovered walled up in the city in 1935. Displayed in a vault, the gold spans centuries of European minting. The museum anchors the northern end of the historic main street.
