The Warsaw Citadel is a large 19th-century fortress built by Russian authorities after the failed November Uprising to control the rebellious city. Its brick walls and gates enclose barracks, a former political prison and the notorious Pavilion X, where Polish patriots were held and executed. Today the grounds host museums, including branches devoted to independence and Polish military history, set among ramparts and old artillery. Recently redeveloped, the citadel combines sobering memory with quiet parkland walks.
