Perched above the Vistula escarpment south of the centre, Ujazdów Castle is a rectangular Baroque residence with corner towers, built in the 17th century for the Vasa kings. Over the centuries it served as a royal seat, a military hospital and an academy before being ruined in the war. Reconstructed in the late 20th century, it now houses the Centre for Contemporary Art, hosting rotating exhibitions of modern work. The surrounding park and nearby botanical gardens make the hilltop a pleasant cultural retreat.
