Tjörnin is a small lake at the centre of Reykjavík, ringed by parks, colourful houses and civic buildings including the city hall and a nearby church. Home to numerous ducks, geese and swans, it is a favourite spot for feeding birds and walking, and part of it is kept ice-free in winter for the waterfowl. Sculptures and paths line its banks, and in cold spells the frozen surface becomes an informal skating ground. Its central position and reflective water make it a defining feature of the capital's inner landscape.
