Built in the 1890s as a fanciful cluster of turrets and gables modelled on a medieval castle, this museum on Helvetiaplatz is one of the largest history collections in Switzerland. Its galleries trace the region from the Stone Age through the Burgundian Wars, displaying the celebrated tapestries seized from Charles the Bold after his defeat near Bern. An attached wing houses the Einstein Museum, which follows the physicist's life and his years in the city. Together the two make a broad survey of local and scientific history under one roof.
