This large late-Gothic church, dedicated to Saint James, dominates the older core of The Hague with a distinctive hexagonal brick tower. Built and expanded across the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, it holds memorials to naval commanders and nobles, along with a series of coats of arms of knights of the Golden Fleece. The bright, whitewashed interior contrasts with the darker medieval fabric outside. Now used for concerts and events as well as worship, it anchors the compact historic centre near the government quarter.
