Housed in a seventeenth-century civic guild hall beside the Hofvijver pond, this museum is devoted to the history of The Hague from its medieval origins to the present. Its collection of paintings, silver, dolls' houses and everyday objects charts the growth of a village around a counts' court into a seat of government and royal residence. The building itself, once a meeting place for a militia company, is part of the story it tells. Its location facing the Binnenhof places it at the historic centre of Dutch political life.
