Opened in the 1850s across from the great domed Estrela Basilica, this romantic public garden is a leafy retreat of winding paths, ponds and mature trees from around the world. A green wrought-iron bandstand, imported and reassembled here, hosts occasional concerts, and there are duck ponds, a library kiosk and playgrounds among the shaded lawns. Ornamental features include a grotto, statues and beds of subtropical planting, making it a favourite with families and a cool refuge in one of the city's western districts.
