This monumental stone cistern is the terminal reservoir of Lisbon's eighteenth-century Águas Livres aqueduct system, completed in 1834 after decades of work. Water arriving from distant springs pooled here in a vast vaulted chamber before being distributed across the city. The still, dark pool beneath the soaring arches gives an almost cathedral-like acoustic, and a small waterfall spills into it. Now part of the city's water museum, the chamber hosts exhibitions and its rooftop overlooks the Amoreiras district.
