This late eighteenth-century basilica in the old quarter is crowned by one of the largest domes in Christendom, spanning a vast circular nave without internal columns. The neoclassical building houses an important collection of paintings, including an early work by Goya, alongside frescoes and carved choir stalls brought from monasteries across Spain. For a period it served as a national pantheon of illustrious Spaniards. Its imposing scale and richly decorated chapels reflect the ambitions of the late Bourbon monarchy.
