These formal gardens on the northern side of the royal palace were laid out in the twentieth century on the site of the former royal stables, though designed in a classical French style to complement the palace. Neatly clipped hedges, a rectangular reflecting pool, and statues of Spanish monarchs create a symmetrical composition beneath the palace walls. The terraced layout provides elevated views and a shaded retreat in the heart of the city. The gardens are a popular spot to watch the sun set behind the palace.
