This monument in the Plaza de España in Madrid honours Miguel de Cervantes, author of Don Quixote. Begun in 1925 and developed over subsequent decades, it centres on a stone pillar bearing a seated statue of the writer above bronze figures of his most famous characters. Don Quixote on his gaunt horse and Sancho Panza on his donkey ride forward at the base, endlessly circled by photographers. Additional sculptures represent the female figures of his novels within the square.
