The Stiftskirche is the principal Protestant church of Stuttgart, rising over the old town with two contrasting towers. A church has stood on the site since the medieval period, and the present Gothic building took shape from the twelfth century onward, later becoming a centre of the Reformation in Württemberg. Inside, a celebrated Renaissance series of carved and painted relief tombs commemorates the counts of Württemberg along the choir wall. Badly damaged in the war, it was rebuilt with a modern interior and remains an active church.
