The Staatsgalerie Stuttgart is one of Germany's most visited art museums, combining a nineteenth-century neoclassical gallery with a celebrated postmodern extension. The newer building, completed in 1984 to a design by architect James Stirling, is famous for its bold colours, curving glass facades, and a public walkway winding through a circular sculpture court. The collections span European painting from the medieval era to the twentieth century, with strong holdings of modern art, including a room of Oskar Schlemmer's Bauhaus stage figures.
