The Bavarian National Museum is one of the most important museums of decorative arts and cultural history in Europe. Founded in 1855 by King Maximilian II, it occupies a grand purpose-built palace on Munich's Prinzregentenstrasse whose varied wings mirror the styles of the objects within. Its collections range across medieval sculpture, Renaissance and Baroque art, tapestries, arms and armour, porcelain, and clocks. The museum is especially renowned for its extraordinary assembly of nativity scenes from across the Alpine regions and Italy.
