At the summit of the Montmartre hill near the Sacré-Cœur, this small square is famous as a gathering place for painters and portraitists who set up their easels among the cafés and restaurants. Once the heart of a hilltop village and home to celebrated artists in the early 20th century, it retains a bohemian reputation despite its popularity. The surrounding lanes preserve the atmosphere of old Montmartre, and the nearby church of Saint-Pierre is one of the oldest in Paris.
