Set on a small square in the 9th arrondissement, this large church was built during the Second Empire as part of Haussmann's transformation of Paris, its tiered bell tower rising above a landscaped forecourt. The eclectic Renaissance-revival design features a richly decorated interior of murals, mosaics and stained glass. It is closely linked to the composer Olivier Messiaen, who served as its organist for decades and premiered many works on its instrument. The fountains and terraces before it create a theatrical approach.
