On the Grands Boulevards, this glass-roofed shopping arcade opened in the mid-19th century and was among the first in Paris to be heated and lit throughout. Its patterned tile floor, ornate ironwork and vintage shopfronts have survived remarkably intact, housing a waxwork museum, a celebrated cane and umbrella shop, second-hand booksellers and toy stores. Linked to neighbouring passages, it forms part of a network of covered walkways that once offered elegant shelter from the mud and traffic of the streets.
