Tucked at the end of a leafy alley below Montmartre, this museum occupies a charming villa once frequented by the painter Ary Scheffer and the salon culture of Romantic-era Paris. Its rooms recall the world of the novelist George Sand, displaying her portraits, jewellery and personal mementoes, alongside 19th-century paintings and furnishings. The cobbled courtyard, greenhouse tea room and rose garden evoke a countrified retreat within the modern city. Entry to the permanent collection is free, and seasonal exhibitions animate the upper floor.
