Near the rue Saint-Denis, this medieval tower is a rare survivor of civil Gothic architecture in Paris, built in the early 15th century by John the Fearless, Duke of Burgundy, to defend his residence after he ordered the assassination of a royal rival. Rising several storeys, it is famous for its vaulted staircase ceiling carved with intertwining oak, hawthorn and hop, symbols of the Burgundian dukes. Now a small museum, it recounts daily life in the medieval city. The tower is one of the few remnants of the vanished Hôtel de Bourgogne.
