Just north of the Centre Pompidou, this flamboyant Gothic church served the busy medieval merchants' quarter around the rue Saint-Martin. Built largely in the 16th century, it is dedicated to Saint Merri, whose relics were long venerated on the site. The richly decorated interior contains one of the oldest bells in Paris, a fine organ associated with celebrated musicians, and elaborate carved woodwork. Its ornate west front, bristling with pinnacles and grotesques, contrasts sharply with the modern pipes of the adjacent arts centre.
