On the Right Bank facing the Seine, the city hall of Paris has stood on this site since the Middle Ages, serving as the seat of municipal government. The present grand building is a lavish Neo-Renaissance reconstruction erected after the original was burned during the Paris Commune of 1871, its facade bristling with statues of notable French figures. The vast square before it has witnessed centuries of celebrations, executions and revolutions. Its ornate reception halls are occasionally opened for exhibitions.
