Beside the Centre Pompidou, this playful modern fountain fills a shallow basin with sixteen brightly coloured, animated sculptures inspired by the music of the composer Igor Stravinsky. Created by the artists Niki de Saint Phalle and Jean Tinguely, the works spin, spray and jet water in whimsical mechanical motion. Figures such as a red-lipped mouth, a treble clef and a firebird animate the square in front of the church of Saint-Merri. The colourful, kinetic ensemble contrasts vividly with the medieval and modern architecture around it.
