One of the largest squares in Paris, this vast open space is dominated by a monumental bronze statue of Marianne, the personification of the French Republic, holding an olive branch above allegories of Liberty, Equality and Fraternity. Redesigned in recent years into a broad pedestrian plaza, it has become a favoured gathering point for demonstrations, commemorations and civic life. Several major boulevards converge on the square, linking three arrondissements. The statue's plinth records key dates in the nation's republican history.
