This former prison on a hill northwest of the city centre operated through the nineteenth century and into the era of Irish independence. Its castle-like façade opens onto wings of cells arranged around central halls, now furnished with lifelike figures and displays illustrating the harsh conditions endured by inmates. During the War of Independence and Civil War it held political prisoners, including women republicans. Later the buildings housed a radio broadcasting station, and a separate exhibition tells the story of early radio in Ireland.
