This public park beside St Patrick's Cathedral occupies ground once covered by crowded slums that were cleared with support from the Guinness family in the early twentieth century. Laid out with lawns, a fountain and a literary parade honouring Irish writers, it provides a green setting for one of the city's great medieval churches. A well associated with Saint Patrick is traditionally said to have stood nearby, connecting the site to the legend of the saint baptising converts. The park is a quiet spot in the older part of the city.
