This neoclassical building beside Dublin Castle was built between 1769 and 1779 as the Royal Exchange, a meeting place for the city's merchants, before becoming the seat of the city council. Designed by Thomas Cooley, it centres on a striking domed rotunda supported by twelve columns, decorated with murals depicting Dublin's history. Statues of national figures, including Daniel O'Connell, stand within the space. An exhibition in the vaulted basement traces the story of the capital's civic government from medieval times to the present.
