This cast-iron pedestrian bridge over the River Liffey is one of the most recognisable symbols of Dublin. Opened in 1816 as one of the first iron bridges in Ireland, it takes its popular name from the halfpenny toll once charged to cross. Its single elegant arch and white-painted railings, lit by decorative lamps, frame views along the river toward the quays. Long a favourite subject for photographers and artists, the bridge links the busy Temple Bar district with the north side of the city.
