This Victorian clock tower at Queen's Square is one of Belfast's best-known landmarks, built between 1865 and 1869 in memory of Prince Albert. Designed in a French and Italian Gothic style, its sandstone tower rises around thirty-five metres and includes a statue of the prince in his robes as a Knight of the Garter. Constructed on reclaimed ground near the river, the tower developed a pronounced lean over time, earning comparisons to the tower at Pisa. Restoration work has since stabilised and cleaned the structure.
