Two Temple Place is a lavish neo-Gothic mansion beside the Victoria Embankment, built in the 1890s for the American millionaire William Waldorf Astor as his estate office. No expense was spared on its craftsmanship, from carved oak and mahogany to gilded friezes, stained glass and a hammerbeam roof. A gilded weathervane of the caravel Santa María tops the building. Now run by a charitable trust, it opens for free winter exhibitions drawing on regional museum collections, revealing an opulent Victorian interior.
