The Royal Courts of Justice on the Strand house the senior civil courts of England and Wales in a vast Victorian Gothic Revival building designed by George Edmund Street and opened in 1882. Its facade bristles with turrets, spires and carved stone, while a soaring vaulted great hall lined with a mosaic floor greets visitors inside. Hundreds of courtrooms handle appeals and major civil cases, many open to the public. The design so exhausted its architect that he died before completion.
