Chiswick House is a Palladian villa built in the 1720s by the third Earl of Burlington as a temple to the arts rather than a home. Inspired by Andrea Palladio's Italian villas and ancient Rome, its domed octagonal saloon and gilded rooms were designed to display paintings and impress guests. The surrounding gardens, laid out with William Kent, pioneered the naturalistic English landscape style with classical temples and a serpentine lake. The house profoundly influenced country-house design across Britain.
