No architect bent stone, ceramic and iron to imagination quite like Antoni Gaudí (1852–1926). Seven of his works in and around Barcelona carry UNESCO World Heritage status — Park Güell, Palau Güell, Casa Milà, Casa Vicens, Casa Batlló, the crypt at Colònia Güell, and the Nativity façade and crypt of the Sagrada Família — an inscription begun in 1984 and later broadened. Together they chart a wildly personal style that pushed building technology into the new century.
